In 2009, I introduced the Stock Ideas list and it has proven to be immensely popular. The list consists of Dividend Aristocrats, US Broad Dividend Achievers and U.S. Dividend Champions. Duplications in the above lists are eliminated and stocks are crossed out when I learn that they have either cut their dividend or fail to raise it. Here is some information on each of the constituent lists and some highlights on this year’s changes:

Dividend Aristocrats: Companies in the S&P 500 that have followed a policy of consistently increasing dividends every year for at least 25 consecutive years. As the name denotes, these are the best of the best – the blue blood stocks, including names like:

- Abbott Laboratories (ABT) | Yield: 3.9%
- Coca-Cola Co (KO) | Yield: 2.9%
- Exxon Mobil (XOM)| Yield: 2.1%
- Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)| Yield: 3.5%
- McDonald’s Corp (MCD)| Yield: 3.2%
- 3M Co. (MMM)| Yield: 2.4%
- Procter & Gamble (PG)| Yield: 3.1%
- Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) | Yield: 2.8%

US Broad Dividend Achievers: Is comprised of companies incorporated in the United States or its territories, trade on the NYSE, NASDAQ or AMEX, and have increased their annual regular dividend payments for the last ten or more consecutive years. Notable names on this list include:

- Avon Products Inc. (AVP) | Yield: 3.4%
- ConocoPhillips (COP) | Yield: 3.3%
- Chevron Corporation (CVX) | Yield: 2.8%
- Nucor Corporation (NUE) | Yield: 3.0%
- Raven Industries, Inc. (RAVN) | Yield: 1.2%

The U.S. Dividend Champions: Is maintained by Dave Fish of MoneyPaper. The list is updated monthly and located at the The Drip Investing Resource Center. Like the Dividend Aristocrats above the Dividend Champions list looks for companies that have increased their dividend for at least 25 consecutive years. However, since S&P 500 membership is not a requirement, the list is larger than the Dividend Aristocrats list and also includes small-cap companies.

- Bowl America (BWL.A) | Yield: 5.0%
- Conn. Water Service (CTWS) | Yield: 3.8%
- Weyco Group Inc. (WEYS) | Yield: 2.6%

Membership in the Stock Ideas list declined in this edition, but it was significantly less than what was experience in the prior year. Overall the number of constituents fell to 198 in the 2011 Stock Ideas list from 218 stocks in the 2010 list. There were 319 stocks in 2009. There were 28 companies that fell off the list, including these prominent stocks:

- Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY)
- Paychex Inc. (PAYX)
- Progress Energy Inc. (PGN)
- SUPERVALU Inc. (SVU)
- Integrys Energy Group, Inc. (TEG)

The news wasn’t all bad. Partially offsetting the 28 companies that fell off the list were 5 new companies joining the Dividend Stock Ideas List. Some of these aren’t household names, not yet at least, but here are some names we will likely be seeing in the future:

- ConocoPhillips (COP) | Yield: 3.3%
- CARBO Ceramics Inc. (CRR) | Yield: 0.7%
- NextEra Energy, Inc. (NEE) | Yield: 4.0%
- Superior Uniform Group Inc. (SGC) | Yield: 4.7%
- Unisource Energy Corp. (UNS) | Yield: 4.6%

You can see the entire Dividend Stock Idea List here. Remember, not every stock listed here is a great dividend investment, but virtually all great dividend investments are on this list.

Full Disclosure: Long ABT, KO, JNJ, MCD, MMM, PG, WMT, CVX, NUE, LLY, TEG. See a list of all my income holdings here.

It appears many people are not, including the famed Canadian dividend investor Derek Foster who sold all his investments and friends/family who jump in and out of the market. I believe that most investors will lose money in the stock market over their lifetime. It is not that the market is a bad place to invest your money, but left unchecked the psychology of the market will lead you to do just the opposite of what you should to be doing. We must follow a process we are 100% confident in. Doubt is the gateway to destructive behavior. For me, dividend growth investing is what I am confident and secure in.

This week we are looking at Utilities – those investments long considered as a safe harbor for “orphans and widows.”

What’s the difference between a Ponzi scheme and a utility company? Before I answer that question, let’s look at what a Ponzi scheme is. Wikipedia defines it as:

A fraudulent investment operation that pays returns to separate investors from their own money or money paid by subsequent investors, rather than from any actual profit earned. The Ponzi scheme usually entices new investors by offering returns other investments cannot guarantee, in the form of short-term returns that are either abnormally high or unusually consistent. The perpetuation of the returns that a Ponzi scheme advertises and pays requires an ever-increasing flow of money from investors to keep the scheme going.

In effect, a Ponzi scheme pays yesterday’s investors with money from today’s investors. It works great until there aren’t enough new investors to pay the old investors. In a similar manner, most utility companies rely on new capital either in the form of debt or equity to fund investment and to pay dividends. Consider the following:

Atmos Energy Corp. (ATO) – Yield: 4.88%
Long-Term Debt: 2000 5,415.4m; 2009 9,854.0m
Years of Negative Free Cash Flow: 6 of 10

MGE Energy Inc. (MGEE) – Yield: 4.40%
Shares Outstanding: 2000 16m; 2008 22m
Long-Term Debt: 1999 148.6m; 2008 272.5m
Years of Negative Free Cash Flow: 7 of 10

Middlesex Water Co. (MSEX) – Yield: 4.31%
Shares Outstanding: 2000 10m; 2008 13m
Long-Term Debt: 1999 82.5m; 2008 118.2m
Years of Negative Free Cash Flow: 10 of 10

Progress Energy, Inc. (PGN) – Yield: 6.48%
Shares Outstanding: 2000 157m; 2008 260m
Long-Term Debt: 1999 3028.6m; 2008 10,659.0m
Shares Outstanding: 2000 26m; 2008 76m
Long-Term Debt: 1999 634.5m; 2008 2,396.7m
Years of Negative Free Cash Flow: 10 of 10

Each of the above companies are growing their debt and shares outstanding while generating insufficient cash to fund their operating expenses, including normal capital replacements, in at least 5 of the last 10 years. For a company to consistently raise its dividends, it must generate strong cash flows sufficient to meet operating obligations and to service outstanding debt. When the day comes that these companies can not raise enough capital to fund the operating requirements, the first source of additional cash will likely come in the form of a lower or eliminated dividend.

So, back to the original question, what is the difference between a Ponzi scheme and a utility? The answer is simply disclosure. All the above information on these companies was made available via S.E.C. filings. Unlike Bernard Madoff, these companies are telling you exactly what they are doing, thus there is no intent to defraud. I own some of the companies above, but I won’t be rushing to add to increase my positions.

Caveat emptor!

The list consists of Dividend Aristocrats, US Broad Dividend Achievers and U.S. Dividend Champions. Duplications in the above lists are eliminated and stocks are crossed out when I learn that they have either cut their dividend or fail to raise it. Here are some highlights on this year’s changes:

Dividend Aristocrats: Companies in the S&P 500 that have followed a policy of consistently increasing dividends every year for at least 25 consecutive years. As the name denotes, these are the best of the best – the blue blood stocks, including names like:

- Clorox Co (CLX) | Yield: 3.30%
- Coca-Cola Co (KO) | Yield: 2.90% | Analysis
- Emerson Electric (EMR)| Yield: 2.80% | Analysis
- Exxon Mobil (XOM)| Yield: 2.60%
- Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)| Yield: 3.10% | Analysis
- McDonald’s Corp (MCD)| Yield: 3.40% | Analysis
- Procter & Gamble (PG)| Yield: 2.80% | Analysis
- Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) | Yield: 2.00% | Analysis

US Broad Dividend Achievers: Is comprised of companies incorporated in the United States or its territories, trade on the NYSE, NASDAQ or AMEX, and have increased their annual regular dividend payments for the last ten or more consecutive years. Notable names on this list include:

- Chevron Corporation (CVX) | Yield: 3.70%
- Donaldson Company (DCI) | Yield: 1.10%
- McCormick & Co. (MKC) | Yield: 2.80%
- Nucor Corp. (NUE) | Yield: 3.20% | Analysis
- Raven Industries, Inc. (RAVN) | Yield: 1.90% | Analysis

- Bowl America (BWL.A) | Yield: 4.50%
- Conn. Water Service (CTWS) | Yield: 4.00%
- Weyco Group Inc. (WEYS) | Yield: 2.70%

Needless to say, last year saw many companies fall off the list. Overall the number of constituents fell to 218 stocks in 2010 from 319 in 2009. What made last year so unusual were the number of big-name companies that no longer qualified for inclusion on the list, some that had paid increasing dividends for decades, including:

- American International Group, Inc. (AIG)
– Bank of America Corporation (BAC)
– General Electric Co. (GE)
- The Home Depot, Inc. (HD)
- Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI)
- Pfizer Inc. (PFE)
- US Bancorp (USB)

The news wasn’t all bad. Partially offsetting the 133 companies that fell off the list were 32 new companies joining the Dividend Stock Ideas List. For the most part, these aren’t household names, not yet at least, but here are some names we will likely be seeing in the future:

- Arrow Financial Corporation (AROW) | Yield: 3.90%
- Energy Transfer Partners L.P. (ETP) | Yield: 7.80%
- Federated Investors, Inc. (FII) | Yield: 3.70%
- Getty Realty Corp. (GTY) | Yield: 8.50%
- Hudson City Bancorp, Inc. (HCBK) | Yield: 4.60%
- Investors Real Estate Trust (IRET) | Yield: 7.80%
- NSTAR (NST) | Yield: 4.60%
- Northeast Utilities (NU) | Yield: 3.80%
- Plains All American Pipeline LP (PAA) | Yield: 6.80%
- Suburban Propane Partners LP (SPH) | Yield: 7.30%

You can see the entire Dividend Stock Idea List here. Remember, not every stock listed here is a great dividend investment, but virtually all great dividend investments are on this list.

Throughout time every angle has been tried and failed. Inherently, individual stocks will carry higher risk due to the lack of diversification when evaluated on a stand-alone basis. However, you can mitigate some of this risk by selecting solid dividend paying companies with a track record of increasing their dividends each year.

Below are several companies stepping forward in uncertain time and rewarding their shareholders with higher cash dividends:

Chemed (CHE) provides hospice services for patients with severe, life-limiting illnesses; and also provides plumbing and drain cleaning services. This past week, the company raised its quarterly dividend 100% to $0.12/share. The dividend is payable on September 4, 2009, to shareholders of record as of August 17, 2009. It is the 153rd consecutive quarterly dividend paid by Chemed in its 38 years as a public company. The current yield based on the new dividend is 1.10%.

Broadridge Financial (BR) provides technology-based outsourcing solutions to the financial services industry. On Tuesday, the company increased its annual dividend for fiscal year 2010 to $0.56/share from $0.28/share. The current yield based on the new dividend is 2.86%.

Equity LifeStyle Properties (ELS) is a real estate investment trust owns and operates manufactured housing communities throughout the U.S. Earlier this week, the company boosted its quarterly dividend 20% to $0.30/share. The dividend will be paid on October 9, 2009 to shareholders of record on September 25, 2009. The current yield based on the new dividend is 2.80%.

Kinross Gold (KGC) is the fourth largest primary gold producer in North America and is the fifth largest in the world. The company has nine mines in Canada, the U.S., Brazil, Russia and Chile. Yesterday, the company boosted its quarterly dividend by 25% to $0.05/share. The current yield based on the new dividend is 1.01%.

Consolidated Water (CWCO) develops and operates seawater desalination plants and water distribution systems in the Cayman Islands, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, and The Bahamas. Thursday, the company increased it quarterly dividend to $0.075/share. The current yield based on the new dividend is 1.50%.

Connecticut Water Service (CTWS) is a provider of regulated water utility services to customers in Connecticut also conducts unregulated operations. On August 12th, the company increased its quarterly dividend by 2.2% to $0.2275/share. The dividend is payable September 15, 2009, to shareholders of record as of September 1, 2009. The ex-dividend date is September 29. CTWS is a Dividend Champion that has increased its dividend for 40 consecutive years. The current yield based on the new dividend is 4.08%.

Many companies have chosen to reward their shareholders with annual dividend increases. For stocks with a long string of consecutive dividend increases, see this list.

Full Disclosure: No position in the aforementioned stock. See a list of all my income holdings here.
